JOHN WALKUS STORY

Yesterday I met a Native carver from British Columbia. His name is John Walkus Green. A company called AM productions did shoot a documentary about his life and the artistic work as a carver within the native community. John did carve totem poles for an elementary school in White Rock B.C. and is specialized in carving masks. When you click on the following link you can get more information about the documentary: http://www.amproductions.com/videos/artsandsci/johnwalkus/making.html

When you click on the following link you can see a selection of paintings John Walkus Green created:http://www.crescentbeach.bc.ca/TOTEM/html/carver/carv/biography/jwgart_E.htm

Today John is living on the street and offering carvings to people. There is also a very interesting newspaper article existing about John´s living conditions in Hastings, Vancouver. I did talk to John and got to know him. In my opinion there should be better opportunities for Native artists to work. One should provide studios where Native people can work in order to make a living. He did carve a beautiful raven for me.
